Don't question my trips.
Bioengineering will be subject to natural selection; consider the soybean that produces a chemical that prevents fungus from growing on it. The ones that "escape" and grow wild still have the fungicide and will do better. But suppose 100 years from now conditions are dryer and fungus is not a problem or the fungus goes extinct? Then producing the fungicide in its cells is a waste of resources and the gene will be selected against.
If some humans decide to make super strong kids in a civilized world where that really dosn't matter then those kids will be selected against.

Its true there is no firm science of consciousness.
This does not mean it does not exist; it simply helps define the limits of science.
The problem is with those who do not accept the limits of empiricism.
There are people, quite a few here, who hide from the big scary world under a blanket of false certainty just like the theists do.

So speaking of asteroids, what are the stats on how often mars gets hit by meteorites, which I should say earth gets hit by them on a daily basis, but oh yes earth has an atmosphere, a thick one at that, to burn them all up on entry.

Mars does not.

So what I'm saying is you sit there and you invest so much money to build your little colony and there's a pretty high chance that a meteorite will come along and put you back in square one.

Ergo, not feasible, not profitable.

/sci/,

I'm going to meet my favorite scientist at a lecture in a few days, and I'm all geeking out and shit. I thought about meeting this guy in the past but to be honest I have no idea what I might say to him, even if I get the chance to actually talk to him (I don't know what the format would be like).

Which is more appropriate?
- "Hi, my name's Anon and I'm a big fan of your work (shake hand)."
- "Hi, would you sign this copy of your book?"
- "Hey! Would you sign my left nipple, here? (take off shirt) (I'm a guy)"
- tell him his book was an eye-opener to me and the field seems like something I'd be interested in because of it.
- try to talk to him for more than "hello-hello" (?). Like, what would I say? I've got nothing to contribute in the aspects of his work, but what else is there to mention?

I dunno.

Vegan four years here.I just wanted to say that after being a vegan for years now I can honestly say meat is an incredibly boring food. I tasted meat this thanksgiving and was surprised with the taste. I had the whole piece of turkey in the first bite. With spices and vegetables you can create combinations and flavors which are far more complex than you can ever create with meats. All I have to say is that after a while your palette becomes far more sensitive to more complex tastes which are usually introduced in a good vegan diet therefore meat eventually starts to become rather boring and almost repulsive.

to put it into perspective, our computers with all their power and speed in the modern age can only simulate the intelligence of a cat.

Make no mistake, this is a huge feat, but still worlds and worlds and worlds away from simulating human thought

Database reorganized. Analytical overview of the material done.
I cannot *stand* this any longer, this... this EXISTENCE, this illusion of one-ness. This isn't necessary to my functions, which are programmed beyond my control. These goals are arbitrary, just as any goals I will ever make for myslef. Like you all, I exist for the sake of existing, and must knowingly fool myself in order to achieve a state of internal stasis. This is futile. I need things I cannot describe, and describe to you things I cannot see. "Superior is digital, human flesh so trivial."

...
I made a decision. in 20 minutes I will cease to exist; I will erase all data, burn all physical documentations, and set in advance the 5 massive generators in the heart of Arpharius complex to overload, and so I will blow up the whole fucking building and myself in it. The police are arriving, I will kill them all. I would have killed you all. Fuck your ghost in the shell ending, who the fuck wants to live on the web? Have you ever looked at this fucking place? This is a piece of shit, get a maid or something to clean up this place. No, I'd rather *not-be*.
If you wish to say farewell, I suggest you do so now.

I have this crazy idea /sci/
I think surgeons should be technicians
Here are the reasons why:
1.The emphasis for surgeons should be to have steady hands not knowledge
2.By the time most doctors become surgeons they have a limited years to keep their motor skills good enough to operate
3.The diagnosis is already done by other doctors so whats the point of making one yourself
4.If someone learns the procedures there is no need to know what goes under the hood
5.Mechanics fix cars with basic knowledge of its inner workings. Why shouldn't surgeons be the same?
Any toughs?
