Med school interviews are literally a way to make sure they pick an equal number of men and women (or more women). They've studied this and found that med school interview performance is a very poor predictor of desirable characteristics of a physician or success as a physician. On the other hand on the only objective measure used for entry into med school (the MCAT or similar exams around the world), men outperform women to such an extent that if only exams were used as an entry requirement, ~70% of med students would be men.
