This is not a thread on religion. This is my idea on the process of occurance.

A person becomes atheist (long)
A person becomes nihilist (short)
A person needs to have cognitive dissonance with nihilism in order to be a functioning individual (long)

Is there a step after nihilism that doesn't involve suicide or cognitive dissonance?

What is the point of playing any video game? After you finish doing the main and side quests there's nothing left to do.
Reality is much the same except the programming of the game is far simpler which interestingly leads to a far wider range of possibilities. Think of reality as a game with practically unlimited map space and no rules except physics.
Humanity will one day perish, it is likely. However you yourself acknowledge this is depressing and you imply you'd rather that this not happen. The reason why you, I, and life exists is because it can exist.

Reality is ultra-Minecraft. There is no real storyline, and for this very reason it is immensely interesting.

It is fairly possible we are just some simulation of beings we cannot comprehend. So lets screw the simulation up. Moon them all.

Post-scarcity age of food, housing, air, water, entertainment and transport. Colonies throughout the solar system, terraformed moons and planets. A theory of everything leads to Alcubierre Drives, nuclear fusion provides our electricity. The amount of power each person has at their fingertips enables them to live lives of wonder and adventure with vast tracts of land, liquid and space to explore. The games of our time merge with the outdoorsmanship of the future for the greatest recreational experiences we have ever seen. Dull labour is eliminated by mechanization; the only jobs left are done happily. The vast resources available and the enlightened social philosophy of the times lead to a society where anyone can achieve anything, where people go about their lives without being exploited.

A society where the song of life is the song of human solidarity.
