You feel zombified for a day or two, half way through the adaptation process, but once you have adapted (takes a week) you feel fine. Not only do I have anecdotal evidence that my mental state is fine, but there is scientific evidence (in case you don't believe me) by Dr. Claudio Stampi that states any mental decline within the adaptation period is soon revived.
He even found that the subject's mental capacity increased following a longer sleep within the cycle. This is why I periodize my sleeps so that I get 4/24h in 5 days a week, and I have an extra nap or two 2 days a week, generally on a sunday and Wednesday. I find that my mental state is increased by doing this.
