How does an academic come upon his or her specialty later in life?

Right now I'm in general undergrad engineering, I have an interest in aerospace but beyond that I have no fucking clue. Then I see my profs and others with phds who went to top schools like stanford and mit and their specialty is something like "error bounds in computational fluid dynamics". My question is, to embark upon a life of fulfilling and rewarding work, how on fucking earth does someone come down to decide their specialty when operating at a high, high, academic level?

I don't think I'm ever going to be taken seriously just saying "I want to work on shit that goes into space"

I think the fermi paradox ultimately comes down to value.

An extremely more advanced civilization will already know everything about us and earth. We could offer no value whatsoever to them, and for all we know the way our minds have evolved are so inferior to the way theirs might have been synthesized or improved over millions of years

right now we're just coming out of living in the fucking jungle. These guys would have had time to master and alter the evolution of their species into extremely advanced and intelligent lifeforms
