The Americans might think they were the first to achieve space flight, but they weren't the first, or the second, or the fifth, or the 30th. They were they... 95th. And no, the soviets might have reached space, but before they beat the americans, an english man named Nigel Birtwistle was in fact the first man in space, and he did so in the 1920s using a prototype tank developed by the Royal Navy under supervision of the queen herself.
