Genetics. ACTN3 gene is responsible for the types of muscle you have. Populations with low muscle mass just have slow twitch muscles, which means they are built for Endurance as opposed to strength. Kenyans Indians etc are that. Strength muscles are different from Endurance muscles. East Africans have the highest rate of the C variant of the gene, which means they are the most deficient in the strength related muscle genes. West Africans have the highest amount of the T variant, which means they are the highest in that.
