Alright /sci/

We all have had those teachers that are super duper hot to the max. Anyone care to share stories? I'll start.

I'm a transfer student majoring in physics.
I'm done with all my GE but I'm basically equivalent to a freshman right now.

Is finishing the undergrad coursework that disheartening? I don't really care about money, as long as I can feed myself and afford a house one day.

>sure, you can say that now...

Well the only reason why I want to pursue a challenging degree that will seemingly yield a mediocre salary is because I love it. I was going to be a music major before this...fuck that. I like math and I'm good at it now, but I want to study the real world.

Is it really this hard to find a good research position? I don't really care what sub-discipline of physics.

Saw this problem in my textbook. It looks fun. Can /sci/ solve it?
>not a homework thread in disguise

Every morning at seven o’clock
There’s twenty terriers drilling on the rock.
The boss comes around and he says, “Keep still
And bear down heavy on the cast-iron drill
And drill, ye terriers, drill.” And drill, ye terriers, drill.
It’s work all day for sugar in your tea . . .
And drill, ye terriers, drill.
One day a premature blast went off
And a mile in the air went big Jim Goff. And drill . . .
Then when next payday came around
Jim Goff a dollar short was found.
When he asked what for, came this reply:
“You were docked for the time you were up in the sky.” And
drill . . .
—American folksong

What was Goff’s hourly wage? State the assumptions you make in computing it.

the only thing respectable about the paper seems to be summarized in the following quote from the article:
“What you have to say,” he went on, “is that it has inspired a lot of interesting discussions. It’s just a very interesting collection of ideas that touch on things we most profoundly do not understand about our universe. That’s why I liked it.”

Dear /sci/

>undergrad physics student trying to get an internship this summer.

what do?
I'm looking for any unpaid or paid student internship related to physics. I am only just now getting my feet wet with first semester physics and second semester calculus next semester. Is it way to early to apply?

Hey /sci/

I'm enrolled in first semester calculus and its awesome so far. We began discussing antiderivatives, and this sparked some pretty intriguing questions in my head, similar to but yet more provoking than the ideas I had thought about when I first learned about derivatives.
So,
Suppose that we have a function for a rock being thrown upward on mars with an initial velocity of 10m/s.
The function for it's displacement as a function of time is:
h = 10 t-1.86 t^2 ---- let this be D(x)

and finding the first and second derivatives of this function will give the rock's velocity and acceleration as functions of time, respectively:

h'=10 - 3.72t ---> v(t)
h"= -3.72 ----> a(t) [it is accelerating negatively due to gravity]

And so you can also take the antiderivatives of acceleration and velocity to work backwards...

...but if you take the antiderivative of H, or displacement as a function of time, then what natural representation does that have??? It cannot be a rate of change because its derivative, D(x), does not represent a rate of change but rather a distance. Is it a a function of time, but relative to some extradimensional rate?

Here is the antiderivative of D(x):
h=10 [t^2/2] - 1.86 [t^3/3]

As a wannabe physicist, I am compelled to correlate the antiderivative function of displacement as a function of time to a natural phenomenon. I'm totally mind fucked, anyone care to share their thoughts?
Please correct me if I have made any stupid mistakes.

thats a bad way to think about it.
but yeah i guess.
There are genes that we develop as fetuses that distribute hormones in our body, yes? (testosterone and estrogen among others that define m/f)

so if your social conditions as a child influence you to be gay, and your biology agrees with it, you will probably be gay.

if your social conditions influence you to be straight, but your biology does not agree with it, you will want to come out of the closet.

and if your social conditions influence you to be gay, but your biology does not align with it, you are likely to join the wrestling team.

"In any spontaneous process there is always an increase in the entropy of the universe. This is the second law of thermodynamics. Contrast this with the first law of thermodynamics, which tells us that the energy in the universe is constant. Energy is conserved in the universe, but entropy is not. In fact, the second law can be paraphrased as follows: The entropy of the universe is expanding."
