Oi anons I was wondering what someone would major in if they solely wanted to research consciousness and mental health to understand what humans really are as much as possible. Psychology seems to be a meme so the options are really just Neuroscience, Cognitive science, and Genetics.

Many problems with this.

This idea only works in a world with rapid, 100% accurate testing, which we are absolutely no where near for even the common stuff. So first, the originating countries own medical surveillance would have to realize that something weird is happening (then honestly report on it, which as we saw, is subject to political pragmatism).

Further, even identifying a weird new virus is hard given the fact that TONS of illnesses have the same non-specific initial symptomatology. There are also incubation periods and people who are non symptomatic but nonetheless infective. Plus a host of other concerns.

Epidemiology is the study of all of the characteristics of how diseases present in populations, it is NOT simple and there is a LOT of uncertainty about what will happen in cases where so many characteristics have not yet been adequately described.

So if you want an effective response, there's incentive to err on the side of caution and go all out.

And obviously, plenty of travelers don't want to be inconvenienced by those measures, even if the virus is still under control in their destination country. Because what if things change there, what if my own country closes etc etc..

Impact is unavoidable, you can only try to lessen it by trying to get as much info as possible and acting just in time.
