Just wait till we create our own sim universe and have to do the same thing to keep up with the scientific progress of our simulated lifeforms. The computational load on the sim we live in will be increased to the point where we can overtake their ability to keep adding detail and spot the bare computational substrate of the universe.

Perhaps then they will reveal themselves to us. Or destroy the sim because the results are now tainted.
