if 2 divides a or b we're done, so assume otherwise

then a=2k+1 and b=2l+1 for some k,l

so 2c=ab=(2k+1)(2l+1)=4kl+2(k+l)+1
so 1= 2c-4kl-2(k+l)=2(c-kl-(k+l)), a contradiction

therefore 2 is prime
