What is stopping us from unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity? Physicists always say that it is the biggest problem with creating a theory of everything, but why is it so hard?

I understand that quantum mechanics covers the strong/weak interactions and electromagneticism, and general relativity explains gravity. But surely that means that all the fundamental forces have been explained? In that case, why are they incompatible with each other?

Sorry if it's a silly question, I never continued physics after my A levels.
