Or (a) private company/ies archiving monopoly/ oligopoly in that field basically dictating company protocols on traffic they effectively own, a FAA equivalent is a mere marionette that weighs company operation over safety. Freelancing is hard, but doable, as well as private space faring. Like in the Alien Universe.
