Hey /sci/, next year I'm taking my first serious

Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics course at my uni. I don't know much about this subject, when I studied the basics in a general physics course I didn't give it a lot of thought, now I'm regretting doing so.

Which books should I use to begin with the very basics of this subject? What math topics should I master or at least feel comfortable with, to do okay on this course? I know some statistics and probability but again, is not too much. Any help will be appreciated.

What is the most important thing every human being should know in order to:

1. think reasonably

2. contribute to humanity

3.enjoy their life

I think every human being should learn about quantum chromodynamics.
