The captain ordered the navigator to take the space ship to faster than light speed.

The navigator hit the button to engage the faster than light speed engines.

The space ship zoomed ahead at faster than light.

This means that the navigator had to see the back of the ship as it zoomed away.

The shock of seeing the ship zoom away from him shocked the navigator so much that he forgot to hit the faster than light button.
