tfw I thought about supervising first year students, chickened out after initially signing up and was now informed that it's actually mandatory so I'll have to supervise some harder shit than I originally signed up for

I don't even know half the shit myself wew

I'm starting a PhD this fall. Going to be experimental stuff on developing new technologies for OLEDs/solar cells. It's in Physics but by nature of the project is fairly interdisciplinary, we have chemists and materials scientists involved also.

It interested me because it's quite practical in a sense. At the same time there's quite a bit of physics going on, nobody fully understands some of the new technologies yet. I hope the practical aspect of it will help me get a job after, but who knows.

I'm slightly put off by everyone telling me to not do a PhD. But I figured I'm interested enough in research that I owe it to myself to at least give it a shot. The university is great, the advisor is not a big name but I did a project for him before and he seems fine.

I'm getting slightly cold feet which happens always with everything. I guess fundamentally it's scary to sign up for 3 years in something that everyone tells me will be shit and useless. Also despite the university being great I didn't really want to be there because I did my undergrad there but around the time I applied circumstances were a bit weird so I went with it.

I also half feel like I should have just gotten a job. Oh well.
