They don't have to be smart, they have to be social outcasts for long enough to have their wandering train of thought reach some real destination without turning them mad. Most people with active lifestyles/any life at all don't have the time nor the ability to just calm down and think, so only uglies get to LARP as smartasses because they have nothing else going for them. Even if pic related has 300 IQ, but at the same time a girlfriend, a healthy social life, keeps good contact with his family and a nice job, do you really think he's going to waste his days away thinking about some shitty math problems? Obviously not.
