I can relate OP.

There's nothing in life to live for except gaining knowledge of the cosmos in my opinion.

Is it summer already? I took a few months off from /sci/ and I come back to seeing /b/'s memes posted on threads which have little science relation in itself.

Time to prolong my vacation. I'll see you guys in September.

Is Chaotic a scientific term?

Today in my biology class my teacher and I got in a slight argument. It was about diffusion at first but then escalated into if the word "Chaotic" was a scientific term. He was saying that it was strictly a social term, and in science it is substituted with "disorderly". I flat out told him he was wrong. I was then going into an explanation of the Chaos Theory but he just told me that since he has a physics degree he is right (Yea direct appeal to authority).

He said I need a journal article from the Journal of Physics which is the only source he said is respectable and that he will accept. This guy is the head of the science department and thinks hes the total shit.

So overall who is right? Obviously I think I am but maybe I just miss read something along the line. If I am right what is some easy and understandable way I can tell him? Its to hard for me to explain a complex theory like this to him and my whole class.

Also a general discussion about the chaos theory.

I have a question that's been on my mind the last few days.

Given the economic crises around the world, and the fact that the US is doomed to collapse on itself, do you guys think that the human race will ever leave Earth?

There is no money in space exploration right now, and the costs would be prohibitively expensive to even venture to mars regularly, so where is the incentive? Money is what makes everything happen, and unless we have a 'Star Trek' moment and everyone decides to work for the greater good of the whole, I feel the human race is doomed to fall into obscurity.

Do you believe we are at the peak of human civilization right now? Do you think that we will just use up this planet and all of it's natural resources without developing alternatives before it is too late?

Personally, I believe we're screwed. Even if we were to explore space, we lack the technology (currently) to even leave our solar system safely.

Thoughts?

Try and keep it civil, I'm not an astrophysicist or an economist, just thinking about our future.

but to the original point, aerospace engineering looks like it has more jobs available, however, not all of them are necessarily space related.

Good evening /sci/

I'm working on a small, relatively simple C++ program, but I need a little shove in the right direction.

I'm trying to write a program that calculates Bayes' Theorem for conditional probabilities, and I'm stuck. I understand how the theorem works, and I can write down and solve practice problems. My problem comes when I try and generalize the solution set.

For every event B, there are A prior conditions that need to be addressed, right?

For example, if I had 5 loaded coins (80% chance to flip heads) and 10 unloaded, and I flip a coin and it is heads, the probability that I drew a loaded coin should be:
P(B|A) = (5/15) * 80% / Σ P(Ak|B) -or- (66% * 50%) + (33% * 80%) which should equal ~44% chance that I drew a loaded coin?

So, my problem comes when I try and set up the program.
Here's what I have thus far:
A[i], where A is the conditional probability, and i is the number of conditions

B[k], the number of mutually exclusive events, k being the total number.

So for every event B[k1, k2, ... , kn], I should be calculating the conditional probabilities relative to every event A?

I'm sorry if this sounds convoluted, I'm fairly well educated in math, but I've yet to take a statistics course, this is for Discrete mathematics.
