Physics is usually divided into fields of research. Ex: Optics, Atomics, Molecular, Condensed matter, Particle, Nuclear, etc.

Experimental/Theortical describe the methodology with you will use in your field.

Example: You can be a experimental particle physicist or an theortical particle physicist. Both study particle physics. One does so in an experimental matter, one does so in a theortical matter.

The experimental particle physicist works at a big lab like CERN or FERMILab, and actually does the fucking experiments, they confirms or disprove theory based on the actual evidence they obtain.

The Theorists makes hypothesis (unconfirmed scientific theories) for experimentalists to test.

A good physicists can be both an experimentlist and theorist. There is nothing preventing a trained experiementalist from also being a theorist. Often a trained theorist is prevented from doing experiment, because they do not have sufficient access to the experiment/lab.
