Evolution thread. Ever have a discussion with someone so ignorant of biology that you just didn't want to live on this planet anymore? I was talking to a creationist that thought single genes being less homologous amongst closely related species than more distantly related ones was evidence against evolution. I even explained to them and got them to admit that, for instance, paternity tests do not work by comparing single genes but an array of genes. They just could not understand this on the large scale, that single mutations can reduce the homology of single genes between closely related branches. If I was being trolled, they were incredibly elaborate about it as they'd gone to homologene etc. to try to bring up examples.

First off I am not religious, so no religious responces if you can help it.

One thing about evolution I could never get my head around is how life developed the senses, specifically sight. We were not aware of light existing outside of our visible spectrum until scientists began to theorise and then demonstrate it.

Some life on earth have evolved eyes as these have clear
advantages for survival. I understand that evolution is a slow process with humble beginnings. What I have trouble with is how they came about in the first place as life would need to be aware of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to begin a 'design'.

I have googled this but its hard to find anything that doesnt resolve to a pseudoscientific religious website.

You now realize it's 2012 yet there are still people that have to be told a 400 year old drunk didn't put 40 million animals on a boat and cruise around with them for a year.

It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us. These laws, taken in the largest sense, being Growth with Reproduction; inheritance which is almost implied by reproduction; Variability from the indirect and direct action of the external conditions of life, and from use and disuse; a Ratio of Increase so high as to lead to a Struggle for Life, and as a consequence to Natural Selection, entailing Divergence of Character and the Extinction of less-improved forms. Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

College is the new high school. There's no guarantee that one will get a basic background in critical thinking in college, and most people go to college to "get a good job" not to get an education. Look at all the biology teachers out there that think it's OK to teach creationism.

Keeping Creationism out of the Classroom

The National Center for Science Education, founded in 1981, engages in a number of activities advancing two primary goals: improving and supporting education in evolution and the nature of science, and increasing public understanding of these subjects.

This video should have crazy mad hits, I'd like to see it have 50,000 before tomorrow
