"Most likely the most recognized expert in space exploration is the German-born, now living in the USA, Wernher von Braun. He's really been the "miracle child of rocketry". He became the spokesman of the German board of rocketry and the head of German rocket research all in the same year. Under his control of the Peenemünde research center, the infamous V2 missile was created, which rose to an altitude of around 100 km and reached a top speed of 5000 km/h.
von Braun was only ever interested in space flight. Hitler got a word if this and had the young scientist imprisoned, and facing the possibility of excecution. He was saved when it was concluded that the V2 project could not continue without him. At the end of the war he gathered a group of his assistants and escaped from Peenemünde from the advancing Russians to the American side. In 1946 he became an American citizen, and today runs the rocketry experiments for the US army. While designing military equipment his only real endgoal has been space.
