Especialy SpaceX is years ahead of the competition and has dropped launch prices significantly and continues to do so.
Launch costs of F9 are about half of what the competition charges and about 50% of that are still pure profit.
That's important for a few different industries as well as research.
If it costs less to launch a probe, you can launch more of them or larger ones.
Same goes with human space habitation research and concepts for asteroid mining.

He is overhyped in many aspects, but his goal of making humanity a multi-planet species may be more important than we think now.
At the moment there are so many things that could potentialy erradicate human civilisation, very few would be able to kill it on two planets at the same time.
