Just did my first Lunar orbits using a Gemini pushed by a duel RL-10 Centaur clone.
Working on a 4-launch landing mission now, I don't have high enough thrust engines to do an Apollo clone so I'm going to launch the lander, a centaur to get it to LLO, another centaur and them the Gemini that it'll send to LLO.
Hoping to get 2 man landing done by '68 this game.

Interesting, I'll have to give this a go in my KSP RP-1 career. Might let me get a crewed lunar orbit before I have the F-1.

Efficiency is just one of a few design considerations, a first stage that just throws an RL-10 powered second stage to ~100km is going to be efficient with a ~400 ISP engine doing most of the burn but it's also going to have lots of gravitational losses as the low TWR forces it to burn angled up form the horizon so it doesn't re-enter before reaching orbit.

While I fucking love RP-1 (KSP RO career mode) it's still a game and can't simulate all factors.

I have been playing plenty of RP-1 lately, trying to find a solid start stratergy to get orbit by 1953 but research times or construction times keep fucking me.
