What is a viable alternative to the consumption-driven economy we have have here in the industrialized part of the world at the moment?
The problem as I take (as I think the general consensus is) it is that there simply aren't enough natural resources around: fossil fuels to cover the demand for energy and minerals etc to actually build stuff.
If the long-term goal is that all human beings on this planet should be able to live a life in freedom, free of hunger and free to actualize themselves we should really conserve those resources until we develop interstellar travel so we can explore new worlds to settle and eventually ehxaust the resources of.

How would this be done in a practical sense?

So, in the UK we're having having a sale on pretty much anything to beat the increase in VAT. So, i'm going to use this chance to get some Science books. Carl Sagan to be exact. I've already read the following if it helps.

A Brief History Of Time
Schrodinger's Cat
Guns, Germs And Steel.

I also understand that Sagan was the one behind that awful, awful movie "Contact". Also something CERN related too please, and DO NOT RECOMMEND me Brian Cox. I'm pretty sick of that bloke.

Sci, what are your dreams like?

My dreams always randomize the events of my life in the previous few days and obscurely incorporate them into a story that, for some reason, I always go happily along with, as if I'm not aware of what dreaming or being awake even is, until somehow my brain subconsciously realizes that my alarm's about to go off and that I'm dreaming nonsense.

Ugh. Dreams and brains are weird.
