If i threw a rock at the moon from the surface of the earth (or if i used a mass driver), how big is the area around the moon where the rock would get captured if it was going past earth escape velocity?

How fast would it need to go? It intuitively seems like it would be earth escape velocity minus the moons escape velocity (11 - 2.4)

Im trying to figure out what the real target size and energy requirements are for lunar mass driving if we wanted to colonize the place : )

Depending on how big the capture area is you might be able to just shoot blindly in the rough direction of the moon!
