It's not like my goal would be to militarize Mars, the US military struggles to recruit people so I would be trying to fix that problem by using Mars as the carrot.

I think that the above ground structure settlement is dumb for short to medium term.

Once you've sent the equipment and man power required to build underground you could exponentially expand your settlement. You could give individuals and couples truly huge apartments. Couples would benefit because they would have the room to raise a family.

Underground settlements means that you could build what ever you want such as industrial centers to build,test, and store spare components such as rocket engines in clean room condition. You could build large water treatment & water storage facilities.

I want above ground structures but I see those as luxuries.


I could see big underground hangers with the volume of the VAB for things like ground surface transport, long range drones, and rockets.
