Sticking an s-ivb on top of it was proposed too and it had 70% of the LEO payload of the Saturn V. I tried figuring it up once and I got that if you could have recovered half the cost of the S-ID via the engine skirt it would be less than $3000/kg in today's money - more than Falcon 9, but less than any other rocket flying today.
