So I wanted to know what /pol/ thinks of the initiative to change Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to the same, plus Art (STEAM).

Honestly I just see it as a way for these departments at universities to remain relevant, so that their graduates will still get jobs in this technological society.

I say this as a prospective engineer (currently 3rd year chemical engineering student). The type of things I could end up doing could be things like designing heat exchanges, distillation columns, reactors, pumps, software, extracting petroleum, pharmaceuticals, etc. I fail to see how this would benefit me in anyway. No one cares what an industrial plant looks like. The best design is the one who can meet your requirements for the lowest price.

Engineers working on automobiles will obviously already have a reason to care about aesthetics. Architects take care of buildings, while civil engineers do the math part. No one cares what a circuit board looks like. Do you really care what your nuclear plant looks like?

Also how come everyone is an expert at what engineering is, and design philosophy, but rarely are they actually engineers.

Overall ranking would be complete opposite of op's pic

Dunno if this has been posted already:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/07/120710133056.htm

>Unlike traditional integrated circuits, which consist of a collection of miniature transistors operating on a single piece of semiconductor, the so-called "spin logic circuits" utilize the quantum physics phenomenon of spin, a fundamental property of the electron.

>The new logic family, which takes advantage of the magnetic properties associated with electron spin, could result in a computer 1 million times more power-efficient than those on the market today.

well, /sci/?
