Goddamn probability and statistics, /sci/. I have a problem I'm trying to calculate some odds for and I'll be damned if I can figure out the calculation.

My reading of wikipedia suggests I need to utilize a hypergeometric distribution. But that's not getting me anywhere. Here's the problem, phrased in terms of colors and balls, though it isn't exactly what I'm doing.

I have 9 colors available. For eight of the colors, there are 19 balls available; the ninth color has only 17 balls available. From this pool of 169 randomized balls I select 19. What are the chances that I'm missing one or more colors?

ANY help appreciated. Beautiful women always related.

Hey /sci/.

So, evolutionarily-speaking, success simply means reproducing the most. So when medical technology brings forth eternal life after/during the singularity, and political bodies ensure that those receiving eternal-life treatments must be sterile to avoid overpopulation, have we failed as a species?

So when the singularity comes, explosive growth will overtake the species until we require so many resources as to have to get off this rock and dominate the galaxy. This is the implication I'm getting from Kurzweil, as I'm reading "The Singularity is Near."

So where are all the intelligent aliens who beat us to the singularity?

We can already extract energy from fusion. It's called "solar power."
