For those of you who study or work in STEM fields, to what extent is your attraction to such studies shared by your families?
I'm a mathematics student, and I am just about the only person I know of on either side of my family who has ever cared much about math or science. There's talent, but most of it is in humanities, language, politics, or something of the sort, and most of my relatives seem puzzled by my interests. Supposedly this makes me a bit of an outlier, and most STEM-types had their budding interests fostered by engineer uncles or whatever. Maybe I'm wrong but that's the sense I get.
