What I could see is a more moderate version of that fascist Alt-Reality of Star Trek. Instead of it being a universal democracy your voting power would be based on what do you get done in the colony.

I'm a proponent for the idea of rejecting surface structures the long term and going all in with modular nuclear reactors & tunnel boring equipment. The idea is that you would build tunnels, and within in the side of the tunnels you would have an apartment built to your specifications before you depart.

Under this Space-Fascist society you gain points the more apartments you build. Somebody who busts their knuckles laying down infrastructure isn't going to take shit from Karen the paper pusher. The leadership that's rotting the US military are the commissioned officers who gain a shitty culture from the military academies they graduate from.

There are NCOs who are promoted into leadership role based on Merit such as being able to lead a group of men out of a really bad situation after the officer died.

I could see a war happening between colonies because of jealousy. Rival colonies won't like a fascist colony that provides private 250 square foot or larger colonies when they live in communal cock pods with zero privacy.

Let's be honest here. Above ground structures are a luxury thing until we've our needs filled.

Needs & wants. Our government wants above ground structures for a glorified flag planting mission.

Underground structures means that you don't need to ship in build materials other than tunnel reinforcement stuff.

Once you have a tunnel individuals & pairs would pay for an apartment to be build into the side of a tunnel.

That instantly jump starts an economy as people would pay for an apartment to be built 2 years ahead of them going to Mars.

That's just living spaces. With underground structures you quarry out stone to build liquid holding tanks for sewage treatment and storage of millions of gallons of water, which means long hot showers.

it also means we can pump methane & other chemicals into the ground like the strategic oil reserve.

Industrial equipment gets to stay out of the elements, and you could build underground rocket test stands in sealed off halls.

This technology plus tunnel boring equipment & infrastructure is the way to go for Mars.

It would also start up the economy almost immediately by having new colonist wire money to Martian construction crews to build an apartment to your specifications.

Isn't it better to send a dedicated weather station then?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_Station_Kurt

No offense, but I would rather not half-ass things as I'm the guy who advocates sending modular micro reactors & tunnel boring equipment. yeah you may get cabin fever with tunnels, but giving individuals large apartments beats living in a cuckpod for 30 years,

The way to go is to bite the bullet by spending the extra money upfront and go with tunnel boring machines & modular micro reactors.

You could move to Mars & have a condo built for less money than an equivalent condo on most of NYC.

That way you could live in a decent sized apartment that's built into the tunnel's walls without being required to live in communal cuck pods for 30 years. Also with such a type of housing accommodation you could create an economy off to bat by having people get paid for building apartments for new batches.

Not just housing, you could build large sprawling complexes underground such as rocket storage/hangers, water treatment & storage where you would build water tanks out of removed stone instead of being required to ship in water tanks. With the right location to process frozen water you could have millions of gallons of water stored so water wouldn't have to be rationed as much.

You could pump methane into underground storage tanks like what was done for the National helium reserves, and what is currently done for the national strategic oil reserve.
