It was the repository of all mankind's knowledge. It's caretaker, Hypatia of Alexandria, was raped and murdered for heresy by a Christian mob, who then burnt the library to the ground.

It was the loss of that knowledge that plunged the world into the dark ages. The cumulative learnings of all our ancestors had been destroyed. Technologies, medicines and so on were lost for centuries before being rediscovered.
