they trust authority. they have a hard time believing propaganda would be at the scale it's at, they're surrounded by it so they accept it.

and if any of them understands what is going on, and many do, they just keep their heads down because it doesn't pay to be a scientist that's being painted with political stuff.

if a scientist comes out as slightly right-wing (rational) everyone is just going to call them a nazi, then every single time anything he contributed to is brought up they'll invalidate it with "oh this was by that nazi guy"

they've already done this a few times.
