Yes this confuses me. If you rode on a photon, to you it would be able to cross the universe instantly, while to a stationary observer it would take billions of years. Really though, how can anything reach the horizon without experiencing the evaporation of the BH in a similar instant? (I assume point at which escape velocity exceeds c is also the point at which time dialation becomes infinite.

I can't read through all of it tonight, but I did go through the concluding statements and I didn't see any mention of the HDLT having failed as a concept, and the section covering it further up barely even describes it except to mention the team that developed it.
Unless I'm missing something the only salient problem with HDLT right now seems to be that nobody really knows how the fuck it works and thus the development of the technology is limited by ignorance of it's exact mechanism, and that seems to be a running theme with several of the other plasma thrusters too.
Fucking magnets dude. On the upside, sounds like ELF has BTFO'd VASIMR so it can be the new meme plasma drive I latch onto if HDLT really does turn out to be a bust.

So I've found out the electromagnet I'm planning on making will have a force of 0.01 tesla.
But what does that mean?
How much weight can 0.01 tesla lift?

I was tinkering with a pocket watch today and crushed a small piece of metal with pliers while I was trying to reshape something. This ended up magnetizing the metal, which I thought was interesting; I don't know much about magnetic fields or how they're generated though, so I figured I'd ask /sci/.

How come crushing metal magnetizes it?

not necessarily true

why does heat flow to cold?

why is there conservation of energy like in the bernoulli effect?

how do magnets work?

our universe is just a bunch of fields and equivalence principles.. most fundamentally it's a computer running a simulation obeying rules and exchanging bits
