Past the undergrad level it's pretty much all embarrassing mental masturbation. If you are able to get through an undergraduate mathematics curriculum and you still consider mathematics more worthwhile than philosophy and poetry, then you're a brainlet. It's a fun game and a nice mental exercise, but it doesn't answer any serious questions. How anyone could be satisfied by studying math their whole life is something I can't understand.

Comp sci student here.
ow can people get excited to learn advanced math?
I mean, math is the foundation of 99% of technology, so its pretty important I guess. But the thing is, the more advanced/higher you go, the larger the diminishing returns and the gap with real world applications.
How can you get excited over something that most likely will never be applied in an useful way and it will only be used to circlejerk with peers? Not trying to offend or sound like a jerk, genuine question.
