I mean I wouldn't hold it against them, SpaceX obviously did a lot of work ahead of time working out how to do landing legs right.
If I were going to build a propulsive-landing rocket I'd start with their design too, why redesign the landing skids for a helicopter, or the wheels of a car, if the fundamentals work perfectly fine.
