How does one read a high level book?

I need to read (not all of them but most) Introduction to Topological Manifolds, Lee, Introduction to Smooth Manifolds, Lee, and Vector Bundles and K-theory by December.

Is this possible? I don't want just a cursory understanding. Until now, every book I've read I've written down the theorems and definitions in my notebook, and proved (or attempted to) every theorem, and then done every exercise at the end of the section. However, it is quite slow, albeit I could be a total brainlet.
