Viruses exist and mutate unpredictably. There is always the nonzero chance that a virus that spreads to everybody and kills everybody could show up tomorrow.
To put it bluntly, humanity only exists because of millions of years of luck, and although the odds are really slim of it happening on any particular day, that luck could run out any day.
Humans are not the masters of Earth, but neither is anybody else. The Earth isn't special or mystical, it's just an inanimate rock covered in an extremely diverse film of moss (Bacteria, viruses, animals, plants, whatever), and we aren't the masters of it because the type of moss we're made of has yet to win any war of conquest against all the other types of moss.
Claiming that we've conquered nature and the elements just because we've killed and/or enslaved most of the types of mass within an order of magnitude of our mass and have populations on most of the Earth's surface is hubris. We're nowhere near having conquered nature. There's still more to do.
