how many years do you think it will be before a human gets to watch a martian sunset?

Lets assume getting to mars is the easy part, and can be compared to modern freighters moving goods across the Atlantic today. (In terms of size/mass, and relative cost of moving any particular item)
Lets also assume fusion has become a viable, extremely cheap energy source, but we haven't come very far in the way of superconductors.

And the biggest assumption of them all: lets assume most of the world is in on this and is functioning as one happy planet working on a goal

What sort of things could we do to start turning our little red neighbor into a second home?

>terraforming mars

already been said but

>no molten core = no magnetic field
hi2u solar + cosmic radiation anything living there for a long time would either have to be sheltered or able to withstand it

solar winds very slowly bleed off the atmosphere, not at a rate that would be troublesome in the short run but would require a means of replenishment, currently the atmospheric pressure at the bottom of valles marineris is = to 40k feet here

If you didn't know any better, you might even venture to say that this was a picture of a place on Earth.

Our sister in the solar system seems almost to beckon us. "If Earth, why not Mars." But make no mistake, it is a place just as inhospitable as the empty space that surrounds it. Nothing short of an indescribable miracle in engineering could result in Mars being hospitable to any more than a few humans.

The best we can and probably will ever do will be a small research base on mars.

Yeah it's mars, and yeah I know it has an extremely thin atmosphere. If it werent for all the rust particulates in the air and on the surface the atmopshere wouldn't have a color. Pretty crazy.

Is there any way to find out what color a specific element/particle would produce from rayleigh/mie scattering? Maybe a calculator or a java app?

Pic semi related.

wat

The whole surface is full of rust, of course it's going to be a brown/red.

BTW,

ALL your comments are much appreciated. Much better than comments I got before. Thank you.

Here's a question I asked before I settled on Mathematics.

-----------

My sister is like a cool friend. Passionate arguments about science, the future, alien civilisations break out all the time. We will make a good team.

She's going to study astronomy. I'm interested in ALL science. Yet it'd be great if we both had fields that worked together. Both learning and using our combined minds.

Mathematics is on my mind right now. How useful is this for astrophysics?

pic; Mars sunset. People will live there one day if we don't squander our billions years old legacy on pointless self destruction.

------------

Nice to hear your thoughts on that too ;)
