Understanding that we're machines of only limited capacity for control of ourselves and our environment is as much, or more, a matter of philosophy. Philosophy is what generates higher level abstract meaning, and it had this posited and figured out long before western reductionist approaches provided the framework to evaluate and derive it "objectively". Though it isn't a race so much as that the two are intertwined.

"Man as machine" really took off in the 1800's, but its seeds are much older.
