According to this man, faith, hope or belief is an essential ingredient for surviving another day, going on living and feeling that life is worthwhile. In elucidating this, he single-handedly explained the ubiquitousness of religion across the world. We may not need organized religion to live fulfilled lives, but we definitely need to believe in something or hope for a better tomorrow. What do we, the denizens of /sci/, believe in or hope for that keeps us going, that helps us get up in the morning and go to work on whatever we are passionate about? Personally, as I look to the future, despite all the recent advancements, I see nothing but certain death and the total destruction of everything we have worked for. So I have come to ask what you see as something to live for. Do you believe our efforts will not have been in vain, and if so, how do you think we will achieve ultimate 'salvation' for our species?

I need answers. What do you personally believe in? And if you don't believe in anything and have no hope for the future, why haven't you killed yourself yet?

Like I already said here, unfortunately you must rely on some kind of faith or hope for the future. Nothing information-based will save you, as there is simply not enough hard evidence in the world to tell us whether life is worth living. This doesn't have to be an Abrahamic religion. Your faith could be your own construction. But you really do have to have faith in something, anything in order to go on living. Otherwise, though you're still alive, you're literally a dead man walking. Read Tolstoy's A Confession. It really goes in depth into this, and he makes a compelling argument. I highly recommend it.

To elaborate, even though no one reads, everyone struggling with this question itt should read Tolstoy's A Confession.

To summarize it for the vast majority who are averse to reading, Tolstoy, an atheist, comes to understand what it is about religion that keeps religious people "going" so to speak. He distills the essence of this down to "hope". Hope is something literally everyone alive needs if they ::hope:: to go on living. Otherwise, they are dead men walking. Literally the smallest negative life event can push them over the edge into self-inflicted death.
