Here's the deal OP.

A large group of sci (of which a good number ain't really serious when they say it) will tell you Stewart is a terrible book and refer you to other popular works.

While Stewart is not as rigorous as those other works, it doesn't mean it has no value and wont teach you Calculus.

I'd say Stewart is good. Although it is long and repetitive, it gets the point across after each chapter.

So if you don't feel quite ready to tackle the most rigorous textbooks, try Stewart.
