In 1977 Gerard K O'Neill went on CBS's 60 minutes and was thoroughly lambasted. The most serious of his detractors was senator William Proxmire, who wrote:
>“It’s the best argument yet for chopping
NASA’s funding to the bone. As Chairman
of the Senate Subcommittee responsible
for NASA’s appropriations, I say not a
penny for this nutty fantasy"

O'Neill's friends and followers wrote paragraphs and paragraphs of seethe letters in response, even drawing this picture and calling him 'Darth Proxmire'.
