Why is the Navy so stingy with their nuclear subs? Even just one of them, refit as a science vessel, would be invaluable. You have so many, and don't need them all for naval defense.

Imagine what we could do with a nuclear science sub. We had one briefly, the Nautilus (or was it the Aluminaut?) yet that sort of thing seems out of the question today.
