Hey /sci/, quick question:

Should I watch Sagan's Cosmos before jumping into deGrasse Tyson's reboot?

I have a question about languages and the mathematical concept of "trivial truthness".

Suppose there is a language over the alphabet {0,1}.

Is it trivially true that the empty string contains an odd number of 1s?

Is it trivially true that the string "0" contains an odd number of 1s?

I was tasked for class to build a DFA that accepts a language that either has two zeroes or an odd number of ones, and I can't decide whether the state q0, which is where the empty string lands, should be an accept state.

Any input is appreciated.

With these trips I retire, but I'll summarize the point.

The "understanding entity" is not the hardware, but the software that it is running. We're used to associating one body (hardware) with one mind (neuron configuration), so calling abstract entities like "programs" the object that is "understanding" does not sit well with us. Thus we can play games like the Chinese Room and place new software onto a biological entity, which has its own personal software running at the same time. But realize, this is only meant to conflate two "programs" that are actually entirely separate. We are judging the understanding that the "Chinese software" inherently posses, against whether the man's own personal software is able to process this information coherently.

For the "Chinese Program", the man plays only the role of the hardware. For his "Personal Program", he is both the hardware and the software. The Personal Program is not the same as the Chinese Program. If we ask if "he" understands chinese, then we say no, just as much as an individual neuron does not "understand" and google's CPU's don't "understand". However configuration of neurons "understand" and google's algorithms "understand".

The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it but the way those atoms are put together. -Sagan

Carl Sagan's Cosmos dates from eighties, have the recent discoveries already made it outdated or it is still a good idea to watch it ?

Hey guys. I love Carl Sagan. I wanted to know what you guys thought about a couple things.

"We are a way for the cosmos to know itself." This can be interpreted different ways. What's your take on it?

Sagan also had unique views on dolphins and whales, viewing them as being close to human sentience. What's your take on that?

Also, Carl Sagan is awesome.

Hey /sci/, was wondering if you could help me with some math...

Can anyone explain to me why the hell
(math) (1-cos^2(x))/(1-cos(x)) =cos(x)+1
(/math) ?

I get that it does, but why?

In return, Sagan.
And a galaxy.

/sci/, let's assume I've created a way to teletransport matter in an instantaneous way.

I have two balls of lead, of the same volume and mass.

I transport one in such a way it occupies the same space as the other.

What happens?
