Here we usually just use COMSOL for photonics simulations. The amount of computing power can be quite substantial though. Any laptop can run it, but it can take a very long time. Especially RAM is a big constraint since, depending on your meshing, it will use a lot of memory. Usually big simulations are run on the university shared computing cluster. You can just push your simulation parameters to it and it will have your simulation ready the next morning for example.

If you're starting university, do not get a very expensive laptop. Do *not* get an Elitebook or a Macbook. You should get something like a Dell Ultrabook or a Thinkpad (preferable a TP with the old keyboard if you can, look in the >>>/g/tpg/ threads for more info), portability is very important, you don't want to carry a 5 kg brick around all day. Run Linux on it, it will make your life a lot easier and give you a big edge programming wise. Octave sucks ass but luckily Matlab runs on Linux (you should use Python anyway, but some courses require Matlab). Run a dual boot for applications that only have a Windows version.
