Physicists usually build their theories based on arguments like:
[math] y=kx [/math] and [math] y= k \frac{1}{x} [/math]
I agree that any process looks linear on a sufficiently small time frame or distance but why don´t professors take time to explicitly phrase this for their students, maybe even give some kind of proof. I bet it would help steer physics in the right direction again, starting from simple arguments like that to build up new and interesting models for physical happenings.

What thing did you prove to be true on a hunch only to find out it had been proven before?
Here are some of mine I can remember:

>General Taylor expansions via integration by parts and induction
>Induction method for positive rationals
>A set isn´t bounded if it cointains a function which isn´t bounded aswell
>My father never loved me
>The n-th integral of a function over a finite domain converges if the function is always less than 1 in said interval (I think, might've been something similar)
>Model of how traffic flows while noticing that car's almost never pass through a street alone, they are more likely to come in pairs or threes
