Pros
>get normies interested in science
>bumps funding for science foundations (celeb appeal, more profitability)

Cons
>every I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE kid thinks they're a qualified astrophysicist because they watched cosmos
>injects stupid politics into science
>complete autism especially on twitter
>smugness
>less "scientists" and more "people who do science" (pic related)

The fact that the word gets abused is irrelevant. People have "personal religion" and there are "religious business practices", but if you go into a class on business or theology, and declare that, you'd be forced to clarify it, and likely be ripped apart in short order.

Similarly with philosophy, trying to explain a "personal philosophy" in any philosophy class is a great way to get rekt, and business mottos such as Google's "Don't be evil", aren't really philosophies.

Nihilism is but a zero point in philosophy, and generally a hole surrounded by a slippery slope that philosophers will accuse one another of gravitating towards (and even Nietzsche, though more poet than philosopher, described it as a stage of development to be overcome, full of dangerous pitfalls). It's an interesting thing to explore, and much like zero in math, may even be core to the nature of reality, but it isn't a place you want to end up, anymore than say solipsism is. If you end up at either, the philosophy isn't going to hold up to scrutiny by other philosophers.

I think part of the reason folks are dismayed by philosophy, is that certain "shocking" philosophical concepts, such as those two, tend to get thrown around by people who have no education in philosophy, and thus aren't aware that they aren't valid as world views in the debate around modern philosophy, in and of themselves, but are rather merely components and points of reference in much more complex formulas. When I see phrases like "the philosophy of feminism" and the like in this thread, it's kinda sad to think that anyone with a college education could actually believe stuff like that. But alas, I'm old, and back in my day, you couldn't get a university, or even JC degree, without taking at least one philosophy class to get the basics.

It's clearly gotten to the point where even moderately educated folks have no idea what philosophy is.

logic and science are both branches of philosophy, always have been, and are only not considered as such by the ignorant who base their views on the matter on how an academic catalog organizes classes. I bet you also think logic is a branch of mathematics and not vice-versa.

>"the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence"
logic and science both fall into this category.

god did he seriously say that? when literally 99.9%< of the world retains moral realist values? that's just negligent.

Agreed. But I never stated that you'd suddenly have all the answers.

>I’m talking about such an effect that it inserts “context” and “purpose” into your worldview, grounding yourself where one was formerly lost and inspiring yourself to investigate further with this new-found understanding.

You start with few questions, because you don't know when to begin. Then you're provided a solid foundation that allows you to see the big picture, and then you're flooded with questions that need solving.

>>8810863

If your first thought wasn't pic related, then perhaps you're not capable of abstract thought. Have you never had a moment like "analytic philosophy made clear scientific writing easier" or "learning economics provided a new lens for understanding history"?

How badly am I fucked, and what do I do from here?

I'm a Physics / Planetary science double major halfway through my junior year. I've fucked up a shitload, but I'm at least going to graduate on time. However, my cumulative GPA is in the tank (~2.6), I've never spoken to any of my professors, and I have zero research or internships.

Do you literally just walk up to a professor and say, "Hey, give me some research"? I've been looking through the research of the professors in my department and it seems so far above my level that its completely inapproachable. I also don't know how they'd react with a student they didn't even know existed.

Where do I start with this shit? Is it too late?

Hey, we have a solid discord going (about 30 members) for discussion of literary and philosophical texts, as well as for sharing and critiquing original work. We alternate every 15 days between a philosophical text, a collection of poetry, and a "fringe" text, usually psychology, anthropology, or occult. The philosophical texts often contain works of science.
Invites close next Wednesday, so if you are interested in checking it out, definitely give it a look. We are looking for STEMlord perspectives to cancel out some of the /lit/ autism, so even if you want to come by just to fuck around that's cool too. We start reading Spinoza's "Ethics" tomorrow. Feel free to join in or post work.
