So I apologize for any pseudo-science in advance, but do hear me out. Every since I was a young child I have been fascinated with the concept and idea of neurocybernetics. That is, theoretically improving the brain through machines and similar concepts.
Starting with me sneaking into my dad's study as a young child and reading Gibson, followed by amazed by The Matrix as a kid, before absolutely adoring Ghost in the Shell as a teenager.

Naturally I want this to be my life's calling and career, but I don't know which field(or at least the proper name of the field) to look into and invest the next six years of my life into. I don't care if it's particularly prosperous or not, I just want to know the name of theoretical field I've been obsessed with since early childhood and work towards turning it into an actual field.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
