Since I haven't given you the friendly reminder recently, nuclear propulsion is the future.

With the abundance of water/ice in the solar system the development of NTP technology will be critical for reaching out beyond cislunar space.

You mean NERVA, which is farther from being an accurate representation of a modern NTP engine than the F1 is of a Raptor 2.

NTP for manned Mars missions is a meme but NTP is the best near term propulsion method for anything that needs to make multiple orbit changes, this is why the USSF is interested in it

>Is NTP a meme?

"Nuclear propulsion to Mars in 45 days!" is a meme, NTP will be invaluable for transit anywhere beyond LEO. The USSF wants it hence the whole DARPA program that NASA is hitching on to.

https://www.ga.com/ga-completes-draco-nuclear-thermal-propulsion-system-design-and-test-milestone
>GA-EMS delivered a baseline design of a DRACO Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) reactor and engine and successfully tested key components of the nuclear reactor, including the vitally important high-temperature fuel elements in prototypic conditions at the NASA Nuclear Thermal Element Environmental Simulator (NTREES)

This is pretty big for NTP considering the main technical hurdle was developing a fuel element that could handle the temperatures needed to achieve 900+ ISP.

>Nuclear Thermal Propulsion.-The agreement provides not less than $110,000,000 for the development of nuclear thermal propulsion, of which $45,000,000 is for reactor development, $45,000,000 is for fuel materials development, and $20,000,000 is for non-nuclear systems development and acquisition planning. NASA is encouraged to develop innovative nuclear technologies that enable a regular cadence of extended duration robotic missions to the lunar surface and Mars

I keep telling you that the future is NTP.

NASA doesn't think NEP could be ready in time for a 2030's mission to Mars but thinks NTP can, and they can piggyback on the development work the DoD is doing.

"Nuclear propulsion to Mars in 30 days!" is a fundamentally flawed assertion to make since it does not reflect what a 2x or more increase in ISP does for you.

As someone who has been shilling NTP this video is like watching 20 minutes of nothing of value being said.

He also fucks up why the RL10 has such high ISP, it's because it is an expander cycle not because of hydrolox.

When you add Artemis VIII there are actually four upcoming nuclear propulsion demonstrations.
